FAIRFAX, Va. (June 27, 2022)—Society of Interventional Radiology issued the following statement regarding the June 24 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

The Society of Interventional Radiology believes the relationship between physician and patient should be free of government interference and political influence. With the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, this ruling poses a serious threat to the physician-patient relationship and physicians’ ability to deliver safe and effective care to our patients during the most critical moments of their lives. As physicians, we have a duty to take all necessary measures to care for our patients with their informed consent and to respect their privacy.

As interventional radiologists, we are frequently called into cases where the life of a patient hinges on split-second decisions, including pregnancy-related cases. Physicians and patients should not have to worry that the decision being made bedside is in any way influenced by considerations other than the wellbeing of the patient whose life is in the physician’s hands.

We oppose any effort to interfere with delivery of appropriate, evidence-based patient care or to otherwise interfere with the physician-patient relationship.
