Program Highlights:  Emphasis on clinical care and procedural training Comprehensive training in both vascular and non-vascular procedures High-volume setting with robust clinical IR training

Training Locations: Trainees rotate through multiple locations, including Jackson Memorial Hospital, a busy 1500-bed tertiary care hospital with a level 1 trauma center, the Miami Transplant Institute, which has one of the highest-volume transplant services in the U.S., and Holtz Children’s Hospital. They also train at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated cancer center, the University of Miami Hospital, the Miami Veteran Affairs hospitals, and outpatient centers with associated clinics. This diverse training environment exposes trainees to a full spectrum of interventional procedures, including high-end trauma interventions, complex transplant hepatobiliary interventions, complex interventional oncology procedures, peripheral arterial disease interventions, men’s health procedures (prostate artery embolization, one of the highest volumes in the country), women’s health procedures, pediatric interventions, and other general interventional radiology procedures.

Procedures Exposure and Department Details: The department itself stands out as one of only two standalone IR departments in the United States. Its clinical staff comprises 14 Interventional Radiologists and 11 nurse practitioners, overseeing the care of 21,000 patients annually. The department features an advanced IR simulation lab (Mentice), where faculty-supervised training sessions occur weekly. Additionally, it leads cutting-edge human and animal trials, focusing on innovations like prostate artery embolization, liver regeneration using stem cells, and geniculate artery embolization. Moreover, the department benefits from a fully equipped animal lab complete with a CT scanner, MRI capabilities, and an angiosuite.

Mission and Vision: The mission of the University of Miami Interventional Radiology Department is to deliver state-of-the-art, safe, and compassionate patient care, alongside training the next generation of innovators and leaders in Interventional Radiology.
