SIR joins Research!America letter asking Congress to support NIH funding
SIR signed a letter from Research!America asking Congress to increase funding to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for fiscal year 2025. Congress has until March 14 to pass funding for 2025, else face a government shutdown.
The Feb. 20 letter asked Congress to ensure that NIH receives the $1.77 billion increase proposed in the Senate’s bipartisan fiscal year 2025 Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill, and to extend prohibitions on changes to NIH facility and administrative costs reimbursement that were passed in 2024.
The letter also highlighted the economic growth, job creation and patient benefits derived from the government’s investment in NIH-funded research and warned that Trump administration plans to cut NIH funding by $4 billion would cause irreparable harm to patients by slowing scientific progress, delaying access to treatments, and weakening the nation’s research infrastructure.
